Maker Adrian

Adrian Brugger, cultural creative and MD of «Konzeptbude» struck lucky in Schaffhausen.

Adrian Brugger is what you might call a do-er, someone who makes things happen. As organiser of the legendary «Stars in Town» music festival, he is the person who literally brings A-list music stars to the town and innovation to Schaffhausen’s cultural life through projects such as the pop-up restaurant «Rhykantine».

Adrian Brugger hails from the Zürcher Oberland, an upland area of forest about an hour from Schaffhausen. Around 30 years ago, he was struck by Cupid’s arrow. «First, I fell in love with a woman and then with the region she was from.», Adrian Brugger confesses with a smile. «For me, Schaffhausen is one of the most attractive places in Switzerland – a small town with an exceptional quality of life.».

Schaffhausen – a family town

Adrian Brugger finds Schaffhausen the perfect place to live. And it’s perfect for families: easy to get around, surrounded by unspoilt nature and with an impressive variety of sports and cultural activities. He is delighted his three children, who have now all flown the nest, had the opportunity to grow up in the area. What three words would he choose to describe what has become «his town»? He opts for «familiar», as you quickly feel at home here and because of the word’s core connection to ‘family’. His second word is «tranquil» and the third, but by no means least, is «loveable». And what is the heart and soul of Schaffhausen? For Adrian Brugger, that’s the River Rhine. Schaffhausen without the Rhine is inconceivable for him. «The River Rhine is the single most important element here and something I especially enjoy in the summer.»

«Stars in Town» – the music festival with the pull-factor

Adrian Brugger is a visionary with a can-do attitude and now famous in the area and further afield as the organiser of the music festival Stars in Town. And those stars include Simply Red, Rita Ora, Jan Delay, Snow Patrol and James Blunt, as well as hit German band Die Toten Hosen – all have played the festival in Schaffhausen. Stars in Town has grown in recent years from being an interesting little sailing boat into an awesome supertanker.», Adrian Brugger explains, «We now have five staff working exclusively on this project all year round.». He recognises one of the key factors in the event’s success is the venue – the Herrenacker piazzo, right in the heart of the town. Adrian Brugger considers it one of the three most beautiful squares in Switzerland, and one which the stars love because of its intimate atmosphere and unique backdrop. «The square is on a slight incline, which runs towards the stage, and the facades of the town houses which enclose the piazzo make it charming. Simply charming. », Brugger sets out.

In addition to having launched his flagship music festival, Adrian Brugger was also the creative talent behind the culinary pop-up restaurant Rhykantine on the banks of the River Rhine. This pop-up installation has brought new life to a section of the riverbank and is now THE place to hang out in the summer. Looking ahead, it’s clear Brugger has a raft of new projects undergoing development in his Konzeptbude, his blue-skies lab. «Schaffhausen», he explains, «has so many interesting places where you can run events». The relatively small size of the own is something he finds positive. You get to know people quite quickly and can develop the network you’ll need to get things done. «The burghers of Schaffhausen tend to be a fairly traditional lot.», Brugger says with a knowing wink. «But if you’ve got a sound idea and work on getting that across to people, the place is actually really open to innovation.» It comes as no surprise that this cultural mover and shaker hopes his home town will be «even more brave and left-field in future», just as he has been.

«Schaffhausen has given me the opportunity to develop my plans for my business and my family in the same place.»

Adrian Brugger

He acknowledges Schaffhausen has given him the opportunity to develop his plans for his business and his family in the same place. And what of his future? Adrian Brugger has no intention of moving away from his favourite small town with the big appeal: «I look forward to enjoying good health here as I grow older. The driver is that I want to enjoy the River Rhine which runs through the town for as long as possible.».

For Adrian Brugger, Schaffhausen is one of the most attractive places in Switzerland. The relatively small-sized town, with an impressive variety of sports and cultural activities, surrounded by unspoilt nature and with the River Rhine as a unique recreational feature, represents an unrivalled quality of life.
