Energy shortage - companies can prepare themselves

Oct 30, 2022

The ITS Schaffhausen offers together with the IVS and the Energy Agency of the Economy a stress test - a free tool for energy crisis management.

The energy supply in Europe is coming to a peak and a shortage of energy (electricity, gas, oil, etc.) can lead to a rationing of energy sources in Switzerland, especially in the winter months. In this case, the Federal Council can impose consumption restrictions and quotas. In the most extreme case, there would be coordinated grid shutdowns.

It is unclear whether and to what extent these measures will occur. Many factors are at play in this complex issue. However, many experts believe that a power shortage is a real scenario. Appropriate crisis precautions are fundamentally the responsibility of each individual. It is therefore worthwhile for companies to deal with a possible power shortage in good time and to take precautions. In this way, they are better prepared for a supply shortage.

In a non-profit project for the benefit of the economy, the IVS - Industrie- & Wirtschaftsvereinigung Schaffhausen, the EnAW - Energievereinigung der Wirtschaft and the ITS - Industrie- & Technozentrum Schaffhausen have developed a practice-oriented aid for companies. The tool is designed to help companies prepare for a crisis and better manage an energy shortage situation.

The stress test is based on the federal government's energy regimes for crisis situations (OSTRAL = electricity, KIO = gas). In the form of a clear Excel spreadsheet, the tool offers concrete grids and operational suggestions for recording and safeguarding the energy situation (energy management) as well as operational processes (business continuity management). In this way, companies can prepare for a possible energy crisis and better manage when it occurs.
