Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express: direct connection from Basel via Schaffhausen to St.Gallen

Dec 19, 2023

From December 2027, the Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express will provide a new connection from Basel via Waldshut to Schaffhausen and on to Constance and St. Gallen. This new line will improve the connection from Schaffhausen to southern Germany and the economic areas of Basel and St. Gallen.

From December 2027, the entire railroad line from Basel via Waldshut and Schaffhausen to Constance will be fully electrified. On 18 December 2023, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the districts of Lörrach and Waldshut signed the implementation and financing contract with Deutsche Bahn for the electrification and expansion of the Hochrheinbahn between Basel and Erzingen. The Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express (BHE), an extension of the existing Constance - St. Gallen line, will now run from Basel and supplement the current hourly service to Schaffhausen and Singen. The new service will be jointly financed by the cantons of Schaffhausen, Basel-Stadt, Thurgau, St. Gallen and Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the districts of Lörrach, Waldshut and Constance as well as the BAV and the state of Baden-Württemberg.

The new connection will improve the links between Schaffhausen as a business location and Basel, southern Baden, Lake Constance and eastern Switzerland. The improved accessibility supports networking and exchange in the cross-border economic region at the heart of Europe and supports the growth potential in Schaffhausen, the Area for Makers.
