Cross-border travel

Are you planning a trip to a neighbouring country - Germany, France, Austria or Italy? Then bear in mind that there is a national border in between and that different traffic rules apply.

You must always carry the following documents with you:

  • Passport for each passenger (for EU/EFTA citizens the identity card is sufficient)
  • Valid driving licence and vehicle registration document (if you are travelling by car)
  • Dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies. The vaccination card must be carried and must not be less than 30 days old.

When you return or enter Switzerland, you may have to declare the goods you bought abroad at customs (if the total value of all goods exceeds CHF 300). Used, personal items such as clothes, cameras, sports equipment, etc. are duty-free.

The following goods can be imported duty-free once a day per person (aged 18 and over):

  • 5 litres of alcoholic beverages with less than 18 per cent alcohol content
  • 1 litre of alcoholic beverages with more than 18 per cent alcohol content
  • Foodstuffs and other goods in the amount of 300 Swiss francs for private consumption in one's own household. If the amount exceeds 300 Swiss francs, the entire quantity of goods is subject to duty.

The regulations concerning the import of butter, fruit, vegetables, meat and meat products (which may not be imported or may only be imported in limited quantities) are subject to constant change. It is advisable to enquire at the Swiss customs office about the current duty-free quantities before travelling.

The customs officials will be happy to tell you which goods are duty-free and which are subject to customs duties, as well as what to bear in mind in special cases (e.g. weapons).
